In the ‘story of stuff ‘video, Annie Leonard , talks about the materials economy process. Nowadays, there are many parts to the materials economy process to get basic things to make complex things like mobiles. So we must use toxic chemical, and will help to destroy our plant and make more pollution and our water will be dirty so we can’t drink a water and if animals drink it will die. Many companies do this to get money. The parts are extraction, production, distribution, consumption and disposal and need to be change to save our planet.
The materials process begins with extraction. Extraction means taking basic natural things to make complex things .There are different kinds of extraction. The first type of extraction, called wood extraction. In this type of extraction we must cuts many trees to get wood to make paper or build our houses. On the negative side, cutting trees will help to increase Co2 percentage and will increase air pollution so this threatens our life. The result of cutting trees the forest will decrease and the animal’s numbers will decrease because animals can’t find place to live. Finally, we must find other materials without destroying environment. "This is the last place that anyone should be drilling for oil, let alone a company with unproven technology and little capital for a project with such a heavy environmental footprint" (Koenig ,2012).
The second part for the materials process is called production. Production means changing material to another situation by adding something to change materiel like toxic chemicals. One example of production is plastics industry. We find plastic everywhere in our lives in food, bags, water bottles …... but on another hand plastic has many disadvantages. One type of plastic called PVC make health problems if we burn it after using .We must find a substitution to protect ourselves from disease and try to save our planet because we will destroy our planet. “The rate of drilling and the volume of fluid used have increased tremendously,” (Ingraffea, 2012)
The next important point of the materials process is distribution. Nowadays, many people think about money so they try pay less and then they pay higher for trades or in big malls. (But, in fact the companies who lost a lot to collect parts for the thing which want sell.) Like cars. Cars have many products such as AC, steering wheel, body and workers how will work on it so must from company bring steering wheel from Japan so must pay transport fee, and bring A/C from Germany so must pay money for cargo . Over all, we must not we be surprised if we find a car which we want pay higher than our budget.
The next step after distribution is consumption. Consumption mean is what happens to products after exiting from factory and who decides what products to sell or not in market. In our world the government decides if the product is suitable to sell in market or not so the local people must accept government decision if they like it or not. On the positive side, the government has more knowledge than local population about products. For example, In the USA any person wants buy a car from outside must buy higher fee than a car which made in USA so local people will look to cars made in the country because it will be lower price and this will help to encourage local industry and build strong economy. Sometimes the weather in US is not suitable for cars which which came for outside USA. Finally, the government has more knowledge than local people about product so it decides what is better for local people. “We call upon governments, industry, international and non-governmental organizations, to adopt a factor ten increase in energy and resource productivity as a strategic goal for the new Millennium". (Schmidt-Bleek, 1997)
The final point of materials called disposal. In this point we must dispel of materials which we made years ago or find anyway to reuse by cutting it in small parts. Those days, the government tries to find some solutions for this problem. One of these solutions is burning materials. In this kind of solution the government talles old materials from one place, then burn it and thus cause a big temperature, steam and ash, this way help to make new phenomena called ‘’ Global warming’’ and our planet suffers of it .The next way of disposal is called ‘’Landfill’’ this is famous way around the world because is easy and does not cost money only digging earth and put waste there. But, the bad things about it this way help to collect insects and bad fluid goes inside the earth. Another bad thing helps to make Co2 and CH4 gas and these two gases are dangers and threaten the planet. On another hand we can find some positive solutions .One of these solutions is called recycling. Recycling cuts materials into small’s parts and reuses in different ways for industry. We can find some solutions to disposing of materials by remaking it, but some materials you can’t do any things with it.
When the people discovered oil in the UAE they star to build many project like building company, factories….. So the local people get a high salary. However, people who locally start to buy any things necessary or not. Or such his friends. One example for this is buying fewer cars. Most, local people have many cars and this will help to increase air pollution percentage and this makes a lot of health problems for breathing.
On the plus side, the government has many solutions. One of these solutions is Masdar City. If you want to go to Masdar City you must leave your car outside the city and take one of Masdar cars. Masdar cars has my options such cars from Masdar are not use gas ,but use solar energy so this will help to reduce air pollution and the most of Masdar is green so this will help to have the Masdar carbon foot print.
